Bio

In addition to her work as The Clay Studio's Executive Director, Jennifer Martin is also an accomplished artist. Her ceramic work is nationally recognized in numerous exhibitions and publications, and she has held a number of residencies, including Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. Martin received her MFA from Georgia State University, and served as faculty there soon after. Since 2005 she has held a number of instructor positions and continues to present workshops and lectures locally and regionally, along with serving as juror for exhibitions and as panelist for cultural conferences. Martin's current professional associations include Artaxis, The Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, NCECA.

Bio

Tyler Gulden is a ceramic artist, art educator, and advocate. He studied ceramics at Alfred University and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and has been a resident artist at notable craft centers like Peters Valley Craft Center, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and Watershed. Gulden's functional ceramics are exhibited internationally in group and juried exhibitions. His current work follows the tradition of salt firing, in combination with the more contemporary process of soda firing, capitalizing on the unique color and surface variations that are a natural part of the process.

Bio

Katherine Hackl established her ceramic studio in 1994, producing traditionally handcrafted pottery and tile. Her techniques and designs draw on the Arts and Crafts traditions of studio pottery. Her distinctive pottery is a collection of hand-thrown functional stoneware and porcelain forms decorated with a variety of freehand techniques. She has recently expanded her work to include an etched porcelain process. This is a new technique for her that blends some of the characteristics of the sgraffito carved work and her hand-painted brushwork while creating a look that is altogether different. Her work brings nature indoors with images of meadows, trees, birds, and berries, among many other themes.

Bio

Nathan Willever was raised in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Maine College of Art, in Portland, Maine. He has taught numerous classes and workshops on functional pottery at institutions such as The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA, Ox-Bow School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, ME. Nathan is currently a long term Resident and Zeldin Fellow at The Clay Studio.

Bio

Scott is primarily a functional potter who works predominately in porcelain, taking a non-traditional approach to the medium. His forms are defined by functional simplicity and the white surface of each piece is decorated with abstract designs in matte black glaze. Much of Scott's work utilizes contrasts - white/black, matte/glossy - along with techniques of dripping, pouring, and spattering. His philosophical approach to ceramics involves what he calls "the synthesis of clay, artist, and individual."
